Back to school. Create a reading list for the imaginary English Lit class you’ll be teaching this semester. Can my class have a theme? It would be young adult, with a focus on female writers/characters with a dash of feminism thrown in. (This is a class for high schoolers because I want it to be and in my dreams we're introducing high school girls to feminism).
- Boyfriend List by E. Lockhart
- Alanna by Tamora Pierce
For these two books I would want to compare and contrast the differences between two different types of female characters and why it's important to have both.
- Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta
- Story of a Girl by Sara Zarr
This book would be excellent for discussion about how we value virginity in girls more than boys and the concept of "slut-shaming."
- Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
I want to include a book by a male author with a female protagonist. I'm torn between this and Leviathan, which is my favorite Westerfeld series but I think Uglies would lead to more interesting discussion.
- Book of your choice and be prepared to discuss the female main character.
